Challenge

To integrate insights and observations gained from teaching Visual Arts to students at Delhi Specialised Schools into student handouts, through a complete rewrite, as part of a project in partnership with MAHE and BCG.

Insight

The shift of visual arts education from a focus on final output to understanding how ideas are formed resulted in students struggling to adapt it in practice.

It became clear that students were uncomfortable with uncertainty. Too much freedom, like in open-ended activities, caused confusion, while clear prompts helped them think.

Students feared from showing their exploration, and feared making mistakes.

Engagement increased when learning felt approachable, using quizzes, observation-based activities, guided choices, and intentional breaks.

Solution

The final written content addressed a more practical student-friendly learning style. I inferred clearer prompts, better sequencing of concepts, and more engaging entry points into complex ideas. The handouts were made with an intent to help students articulate choices, stay engaged, and approach creativity as a process rather than a final output.
